Just like most sneakers in the 80s, basketball is at the root of it all. To be specific, collegiate basketball was all the rage! Naturally, Nike saw an opportunity there and totally took it. That’s why in 1985, Peter Moore mashed up the Nike Terminator, AF1, and AJ1, and gave us the Nike Dunk. But what was special about them? Well, the first collection that came out included eight colorways. Each colorway was a tribute to a major college, which explains the “Be True to Your School” (BTTYS) collection name.
Although they were a success on the hardwood floor, the Dunks did not blow up the way Air Jordans did. However, the silhouette’s popularity spread to the streets! And guess who picked up Dunks there?
