Selling takes five steps, from the application to the payout.
We already covered whether Whatnot is legit , so now we take it a step further. If you have set your mind on becoming a reseller , the process is pretty simple. The help center’s start-selling page breaks it down like this:
Apply: create an account, then tap + Sell to send your seller application.Schedule a show: pick a date, a time, a category and a thumbnail.Prepare: gather your stock, add listings and make sure you can print labels.Go live: run auctions, fixed-price listings and Giveaways in real time.Ship: print your labels, pack the orders, add a payout method and start a payout.
If being on camera worries you, the same page answers it plainly: you don’t need to show your face when you go live. In fact, you can keep the camera on the pairs or the cards the whole time.
How does the seller application work?
The seller application is a short form in the app, and the help center says many sellers unlock access within minutes.
Starting the application. All you gotta do to get started is open the app, tap the + Sell button, then Get Started . According to the application guide , you must be at least 13 and live in a country where selling is supported. Sellers aged 13 to 17 also need a parent or guardian’s permission.
Accepting the Community Guidelines. Next, you agree to the Community Guidelines, because every platform has its rules. Then you choose your main category, for example sneakers, figurines or trading cards. However, a few are gated: Luxury Bags and Accessories need separate approval, according to the gated categories page .

Three questions in the first version of this guide, from December 2025, are missing from the help center’s list of steps.
When we wrote this guide in December 2025, the application also asked about your monthly sales, the other platforms you sell on and your social media links. As of 9 October 2026, however, the application page lists only the guidelines, the category, your experience, your name and your return address. As a result, you may never see these three screens.

How do you schedule your first live show?
You schedule a show by giving it a name, a date and time, a category and a primary selling format, then publishing it.
Those four steps are all you need, according to the help center’s scheduling page . A thumbnail or preview video is optional, but the page recommends a vertical 9:16 image at 1080 × 1920 pixels. You can also add tags, moderators and a repeat schedule, set shipping for that show, and make it public or private.
Scheduling ahead matters, because it gives you time to prepare listings and promote the show. The start-selling page lists the prep: gather your inventory, add product listings, make sure you can print shipping labels, set up your camera and lighting, and share the show to bring buyers in.
Giveaways are optional too. They let you offer free items to your community during a show. However, the catch is that you cover the giveaway shipping as the seller, according to the Giveaway guide .
Auction vs Buy It Now, and the listings that last
There are two sale formats, Auction and Buy It Now, and a listing’s details decide whether it outlives the show.

Auction
The price rises as viewers bid, for a set duration.
Buy It Now (BIN)
A fixed price, open after the show only as a Quality Listing.
Quality Listing
Image and description filled in, so it stays up after the show.
How long a listing lives depends on its details, according to the help center’s new seller guide to listing products . Listings without an image and description disappear when the show ends. By contrast, Quality Listings have an image and a description, so they stay up and keep items visible.
While you are live, the image and description are optional, because you may list something you only show on camera. You can also switch formats later, for example from BIN to auction. In fact, the guide says most sellers use a mix of both in their shows. Because the price rises with each bid, an auction also shows you the demand for a piece.
How much does Whatnot charge sellers?
The platform charges a commission on the item price and a payment processing fee on the whole order.

According to the seller fees page , the standard US commission is 8% in most categories and 4% for Coins. The rate drops as sales grow, because four weeks of sales set your tier.

Processing, however, is separate. In the US, Canada and Australia it is 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, the same page says, on the total the buyer pays, shipping and tax included.
We worked through the page’s own example: a $10 item with $4.99 shipping and $0.85 sales tax. The commission is 8% × $10 = $0.80. Processing is 2.9% × $15.84 (the whole order) = $0.46 rounded, plus $0.30, which is $0.76. So the fees total $1.56, which leaves $8.44 of the item price. Market prices move and are shown for reference, not as a promise.
How do shipping and payouts work?
Shipping is charged at checkout, so you print a prepaid label, then start a payout once your balance is available.
Because shipping is charged at checkout, you don’t need to buy your own label, according to the label guide . Print the prepaid label at 4 × 6 inches on a thermal printer or 8.5 × 11 inches on a standard one.

The rule has teeth, according to the seller shipping policy . If no label is generated in time, buyers may cancel or get a refund. In addition, late parcels hurt your average ship time and on-time scan rate, the metrics behind Premier Shop and Account Health.
According to the payout page , you can start a payout whenever your available balance is positive, but money from undelivered orders stays in processing. It usually reaches your bank in 1 to 2 business days in most countries, 2 to 3 in Australia and Japan, and 3 to 4 in Canada. For the tax side of selling, see our reseller tax guide .
Our take on running a first show
Our advice is to start small: a short show, a mix of formats, and every price checked against the fees first.
We checked the help center’s pages on the application, listings, fees, shipping and payouts on 9 October 2026. First, list your best pieces as Quality Listings before the show, because those stay visible after it ends. Next, mix auctions with Buy It Now, because the guide says that gives buyers more ways to shop.
In addition, estimate the fees on each piece before you price it. In the $10 example above, $1.56 went to fees, which is 15.6% of the item price ($1.56 ÷ $10). As a result, the fixed $0.30 listed on the fee page weighs more on a cheap item than on a pricier one. Finally, print a test label before you go live, because the two-day window starts at the sale.
