Cloudflare Explained – How It Protects Sites From Automation
Cloudflare is a web security platform that sits between visitors and a retailer’s servers, checking each request to separate real shoppers from automated traffic. Cloudflare bot protection is common in sneaker retail because limited drops bring huge crowds and bots at the same moment, and it judges traffic through request patterns, browser challenges, browser signals and bot scoring. It does not block every bot, and seeing a verification page does not mean you were flagged.
If you’ve ever tried to buy a limited sneaker online, you’ve probably hit one of those verification screens. This guide explains what sits behind them, for anyone running NikeShoeBot tasks on protected retailers.
What Is Cloudflare?
Cloudflare is a web infrastructure and security platform that helps websites manage traffic, improve performance, and protect against online threats. It acts as an intermediary between website visitors and the website’s hosting servers, so incoming requests can be evaluated before they reach the retailer’s infrastructure.
The main features are:
- Bot protection: Identifies and manages potentially unwanted automated traffic.
- DDoS protection: Helps prevent traffic floods from disrupting website availability.
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Filters potentially harmful requests.
- Rate limiting: Controls excessive requests within a specific period.
- Performance optimization: Improves website speed through caching and a global network.
For online retailers, these features are particularly useful during high-demand product releases.
Why Do Sneaker Retailers Use Cloudflare?
Retailers use it because limited releases send thousands of customers to the same product page at once, and not all of that traffic comes from regular shoppers. According to the 2025 Imperva Bad Bot Report, as covered by SecurityBrief, bots made up 51% of all web traffic in 2024, and malicious bots 37%.
Sneaker bots are automated programs designed to perform online shopping tasks with minimal manual interaction. Depending on their functionality, they can monitor product availability, navigate websites, and interact with checkout systems. That creates several problems for retailers:
- Excessive traffic: Large numbers of automated requests can increase server load and affect website performance.
- Unfair competition: Automated purchasing can make limited inventory harder for manual shoppers to access.
- Inventory abuse: Repeated interactions with carts and checkout systems can hurt the shopping experience.
- Website security: Automated traffic can also include scraping, fraudulent activity, and other harmful requests.
The platform helps by identifying suspicious traffic and applying the appropriate security measures.
How Does Cloudflare Bot Protection Work?
It combines several detection methods instead of relying on one, analyzing different signals to decide whether traffic looks legitimate or automated. Three of those signals are below, and a fourth, bot scoring, turns them into a number.
- Traffic analysis: Incoming requests are examined for unusual patterns. Repetitive activity, suspicious request volumes, and behavior inconsistent with ordinary browsing can all contribute to bot detection. The connection a request arrives through can be one more input, which is why proxy choice matters (see our guide to residential, ISP and datacenter proxies).
- Browser challenges: Its most recognizable feature is browser verification. Visitors may see a page asking them to verify their browser before they get in, which helps separate legitimate visitors from automated requests. Our guide to what a CAPTCHA is covers the wider idea.
- Browser signals: It can evaluate browser-related information, including JavaScript-based detection signals. According to Cloudflare’s bot score docs, JavaScript detections are aimed at headless browsers and other automation tools. These signals feed a broader assessment rather than serving as standalone proof of bot activity.
How Does Cloudflare Bot Scoring Work?
Bot scoring is the method that ranks a request from most to least likely to be automated. Enterprise Bot Management uses machine learning and other detection technologies to give each request a score from 1 to 99, according to Cloudflare’s bot score docs. Lower scores mean a higher likelihood of automated traffic, and retailers can build custom security rules on them.
The same docs group scores into bands, shown below.
Granular scores are only available to Enterprise customers who bought Bot Management, according to the same docs. Other plans see the groupings in Bot Analytics.
What Does a Cloudflare Verification Page Mean?
It means extra security checks are running before access is granted. It does not automatically mean you were identified as a bot.
Cloudflare’s Main Bot Protection Services
The platform offers three bot-specific products, and a retailer picks one based on its security requirements and plan, as Cloudflare’s documentation lays out.
- Bot Fight Mode: Included with the Free plan, it challenges traffic matching known bot patterns with a single toggle.
- Super Bot Fight Mode: Available on Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, it adds verified bot allowlisting, per-category actions, static resource protection, and JavaScript detections.
- Bot Management: The advanced Enterprise add-on, with bot scoring, analytics, and more customizable detection.
These tiers let retailers choose different levels of protection depending on their needs.
Does Cloudflare Block All Sneaker Bots?
No. It can detect and manage many types of automated traffic, including activity tied to automated purchasing software, but it does not automatically catch and block every sneaker bot.
Results depend on the security products enabled, the retailer’s configuration, and the detection signals available. Some automated requests may be blocked, while others get extra verification or are allowed through. Not all automation is malicious either: search engine crawlers, monitoring services, and legitimate integrations rely on automated requests too. The goal is to separate unwanted automation from legitimate activity, not to block everything.
Can Cloudflare Block Legitimate Customers?
Yes, occasionally. Real visitors can hit security challenges or restrictions because of a site’s configuration or suspicious traffic signals, which is why retailers have to balance security with customer experience.
Why You Keep Seeing Cloudflare on Drops
This platform has become an important part of modern e-commerce security. For sneaker retailers dealing with limited releases and sudden traffic spikes, its bot detection and traffic management help protect infrastructure and improve the shopping experience.
Understanding how it works gives useful insight into the technology behind modern sneaker releases and the ongoing contest between automated traffic and retail security systems.
