Remember June 2023? That was when Nike dropped the Nike Mac Attack campaign featuring Travis Scott and John McEnroe. Everything was fine and dandy back then. But well, not everything always goes according to plan. So today, we’re gonna take a look at the Travis Scott John McEnroe drama! But is it really drama, or is it another smart marketing stunt by the Swoosh? Let’s find out together, and you’ll be the judge of that!
Let’s start off with the silhouette itself, the Nike Mac Attack. The tennis shoe was a banger in the 1980s, just like its namesake. But of course, better and more advanced sneakers eventually stole the show. Now, Nike being Nike, decided to bring the Mac Attack back (yes, we know this rhymes)! So, in 2023, the Swoosh brought their strongest selling point to market the comeback of the silhouette: Travis Scott. Naturally, though, they brought back John McEnroe too, the man behind the name. Hence, we got the Nike Mac Attack campaign! But well, trouble brews even in heaven…
Fast forward to December 2023, and the show unfurled. You see, the June 2023 Nike Mac Attack was unbranded and came back in its classic looks. Oh, and it’s currently worth about $180 in resale. However, the December 2023 pair features Travis Scott’s signature Cactus Jack branding. And that alone bumped the shoe’s value to $485 on average! Oh well, collaborations really do sell.
This branding and the change of the shoe’s name didn’t sit well with John McEnroe. And that was obvious in the Zoom call that somebody leaked online. In that video, we have a heated McEnroe arguing that the kicks should be called Cactus Mac Attack instead of Cactus Jack Attack. And we have Travis Scott who says that Cactus Mac was never a thing. But oh that didn’t end there.
People almost bought the beef between these two until John McEnroe appeared in another video. In that video, he wore the Travis Scott Mac Attack that featured a striked-out “Jack” which was replaced with “Mac”. And then, a clapback video of Travis appeared, in which he spray painted the Cactus Jack logo on John McEnroe’s plaque. So at this point, it became obvious that the Swoosh put some extra hours into that marketing! And it kinda worked because they got the industry talking.
You know, we appreciate some saucy drama in the industry. It sure keeps things interesting for us, and it sells for the brands! And well, this stunt whether serious or not, certainly helped the kicks sell and become worth 3x their original price. But we gotta admit, nobody does interesting campaigns the way Nike does, and we have a few examples here! For more interesting industry news, make sure you check out our blog.
